The Akita
The Akita is not just any dog-He is a special breed, with special requirements, but owning one can be extremely rewarding! Understanding what makes this majestic breed tick BEFORE you get an Akita puppy is important to make sure they will be a good fit for you, your lifestyle, and your family. An Akita has a quiet strength, dignity and courage and is large, alert, and powerful with much substance and heavy bone. The broad head, with deep muzzle, small eyes, erect ears and the large curled tail are all characteristic of this breed. An Akita's nature is is to be extremely loyal and devoted to his master. They are generally quiet and not prone to
nuisance barking-if your Akita is barking you better listen! Despite their quiet nature, they are natural guardians. They do not need special training-the Akita will instinctively guard you and your home. Because of this trait, they require extensive socialization, meeting people and other animals while they are puppies. They then learn that all strangers are not a threat. They like to be the pack leader and can be a bit willful at times so some obedience training may be beneficial for a harmonious household. They also need to know who's the boss-Be The Alpha. They love attention and affection and need to be an integral part of their family's household. A quality dog will take a good amount of time and discipline with a respectful, loving hand and respond best to respectful commands with positive training that relies mainly on motivation rather than force. Akitas are not known as an overly hyperactive breed, but they can both climb and dig, so a 6' fence may be needed for a secure back yard . An Akita's exercise level is medium; therefore they will be happy with just a good daily walk or jog. These big dogs are playful-downright silly at times-and love to romp. Most will kennel and crate quite easily IF trained as puppies. Proper containment and restraint of an Akita should be exercised at all times. There is a spiritual significance attached to the Akita: When a child is born in Japan, the proud family will receive a small statue of an Akita signifying health, happiness, and a long life. If you are seeking a strong, loyal, protective, affectionate and loving companion who can have a mind of his own and may be a bit stubborn at times, then the Akita just might be the perfect dog for you....
